MULTI-SUSPENSION VIDEO WALL SYSTEM

OVERVIEW

This project comprises five segments of an integrated wide-angle video wall, totalling approximately 400 screens, forming a segmented curve. 100 screen elements per side are mounted as flat, static arrays to fixed walls at each side of the central platform and choir risers. Approximately 80 elements per side are suspended statically from the roof structure in segmented, curved arrays to span from the fixed arrays to the central array. The central array comprises about 40 elements in a flat array, mounted to a lift and stabilized by a traveling mechanism to allow the array to drop down to the level below the platform, thus exposing to view the baptistry behind and above the platform and choir risers.

The design was detailed by DCC in Revit to help visualization of the spatial relationships between the various parts to be built into an existing building that was documented in early CAD. Views were generated to allow each scope area to be clearly visualized and analyzed by the various engineering and trade contributors. For example, the carpenters had to cut the stacked floors, reinforce the cut-outs and build rooms below the platform to tight tolerances according to the Revit drawings. The roof rigging and video wall suspension elements were designed and detailed to guide the manufacturers, as were the centre wall truss system, lift frame, trolley system and moving wire harness. These elements were detailed down to metal shapes, nuts and bolts, integrating 3D modeling from other software. Safety was a priority given that the choir members could conceivably touch the central wall as it travels. Engineers for the team, the client and the county had to approve the work for construction in an earthquake zone. Due to the team’s combined efforts and the quality of the drawings, all submissions passed review the first time.
